What is a gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy, also known as upper endoscopy, is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the digestive tract’s top area, including the oesophagus, stomach, and the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). 

Using a slender, flexible tube with a camera and light source called an endoscope, we can capture detailed images of these internal organs to diagnose and treat conditions with minimal discomfort. 

Why would someone need a gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy is performed to investigate symptoms or conditions affecting the upper digestive tract. Common reasons for undergoing this procedure include:

Persistent heartburn

• Difficulty swallowing
• Unexplained nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Suspicion of ulcers or tumours

It is also used for screenings and to check for early signs of cancer. Gastroscopy can be both diagnostic and therapeutic, allowing us to address issues such as removing polyps or cauterising bleeding sites during the procedure. 

What happens during a gastroscopy?

1. Before the Procedure:
   We will provide instructions, typically involving fasting for several hours to ensure a clear view of your digestive tract. 
2. During the Procedure:
   You will receive a mild sedative to help you relax and minimise discomfort.
3. Recovery:
   After the gastroscopy, you might experience mild bloating or a sore throat, which usually disappears within a few hours. You can generally return to normal activities shortly afterwards, though you may need to avoid heavy meals for a short period.
4. Results:
   Our staff will review the images and any biopsies taken during the procedure. If abnormalities are found, such as polyps or inflammation, we will discuss the findings and potential treatment options with you.

  There is a small risk of infection at the site where the endoscope is inserted.

  Minor bleeding may occur, especially if biopsies are taken, or treatments are performed during the procedure.
• Perforation:
  Although rare, there is a risk of a tear or perforation in the digestive tract, which may require further treatment. 
• Discomfort:
  Some patients may experience a sore throat or bloating post-procedure, though these symptoms are typically temporary.
